Rashotte Home Building Centre has been a part of the Tweed and the surrounding community for many years.
It all began with Peter Rashotte who was a pioneer in the French Settlement northeast of Tweed. Two members of his large family, Joseph and Paul started a factory between their homes on St. Joseph and Arthur streets in Tweed. Here they manufactured windows, doors and other woodworking and milling. On top of all this they sold lumber and building supplies.
In the late 1920’s, Joseph and Paul (known as the Rashotte Brothers) dissolved their partnership and Joseph went on to buy the Houston Lumber Company on Metcalfe Street. Joseph renamed the business as The Jos Rashotte and Sons until its incorporation on December 8, 1944 with himself as president.
Joseph Rashotte, was a contractor by trade. He was able to draw his own plans and work from them. He built houses, schools and apartment buildings in Tweed, Belleville, Flinton, Kingston and Brockville. His local projects include St. Carthagh’s School, the tower on St. Carthagh’s Church, the Tweed Municipal Building and the Flinton Continuation School. Joseph died in 1973 but The Jos. Rashotte Company Limited was carried on by his children, particularly Donald. Donald worked on the construction projects as well as being responsible for the financial management of the company. Upon Joseph’s retirement, Donald became president of the company. Dorothy, Marjorie, Terrance, Donald, Raymond, Kenneth, Stafford and Cleon all had shares in the company.
In 1986, Donald’s youngest son, Timothy, purchased all outstanding shares to become the sole shareholder and president of the company. Upon consolidation, the company experienced rapid growth, increasing the workforce from five to over twenty today. Over the years the company has changed names on different occasions but has always operated under the Jos. Rashotte Company Limited. In 2004 we were very excited to join the Home Hardware family making us Rashotte Home Building Centre. As one of Tweed’s oldest family established businesses, the company now takes pride in providing the highest standard in customer service and quality building supplies.
